"Excellent
- should be compulsory for all dentists to view." - GDP
evaluator
4,400 new cases of oral cancer
were recorded in 2002. Smoking kills more than 120,000 people
in the UK each year. Dentists and their staff can have a significant
impact on these disturbing figures.
This new interactive multimedia
CD-ROM is a major update to "Screening for Oral Cancer
and Pre-cancer in general dental practice".
The key messages of this program are:
• Oral cancer can be lethal
• It is becoming more common worldwide
• Knowledge regarding major risk factors is well established: oral cancer
can be prevented
• Small lesions are easier to treat; lesions suspected to be malignant should
be referred to a specialist without delay
• Opportunistic screening of the oral cavity for malignant and potentially
malignant disease at regular dental examinations makes sense
• Primary care practitioners can play a key role in both advising their
patients about risk factors and case detection.
The course is intended primarily for general dental practitioners, though
dental care professionals (DCPs), general medical practitioners and pharmacists
are also directly addressed and will find much of the content valuable.

cessation
- Highlight the importance that early detection
brings to the prognosis for the patient
- Identify the correct screening procedure
- Inform regarding the aetiology of oral
cancer, the risk factors, signs, symptoms and differential
diagnosis
- Provide an up-to-date reference and self-assessment
resource for use within the practice or for private study.
Objectives
Upon completion of the program you should
be
- aware of the importance of routine screening for oral cancer
and the unique role that you can play
- able to identify patients at particular risk
- familiar with helping patients to quit smoking and related
